Former imperial castle, today the seat of "Zamek" Culture Centre, was erected in the early-20th century as residence for the Emperor Wilhelm II of Prussia. In the inter-war period, the Neo-Romanesque building was the seat of the newly-established University of Poznań. It was also in the former imperial apartments that Polish presidents resided during their visits to Poznań. During World War II, the castle was extensively refurbished by Albert Speer.
After the war, for several years the castle was home to the municipal authorities.

Today, systematic renovation of the castle has been under way for a number of years. Replacement of the lift and doors, as well as installation of lift- and stairway platforms have turned the building into a place friendly for the disabled.
The castle is very conveniently located in the centre of the town. It is placed in the vicinity of the railway and coach stations, as well as a number of hotels. Cars can be parked in the castle’s guarded lot.

Most castle spaces are used for the operation of "Zamek" Culture Centre; others can be commercially let to other users (if their activity does not collide with the “Zamek’s” cultural program). Stately halls, foyers or courtyards can also be rented for conferences, meetings or banquets.
